Our Red Barrels Love Parties!

Our Red Barrel Program helps to keep our shelves stocked with food. These large red plastic tubs are located all around Des Plaines - in the Chamber of Commerce, Public Library, Park District, City Hall, churches, schools, banks, grocery stores, and more.

If you are planning a holiday party, or any other type of party, and you would like to host one of our Red Barrels for your event, be sure to call our Executive Director, Debbie Walusiak and reserve one. There is a limited supply available, so reserve early. Call Debbie at 847-337-1443.  We thank you for including the Pantry at your party.

Trinity Lutheran Reaches Out

Trinity Lutheran Church, who so graciously shares its parking lot with us, introduced a community lunch for all on the 2nd and 4th Saturdays of July-September. Fives Loaves and 2 Fishes, as it is called, offered a delicious luncheon buffet for all guests. The food was home cooked and truly delicious; from salads and casseroles to vegetarian chili and peanut butter & jelly sandwiches and, of course, really yummy desserts! The Pantry clients and volunteers gave it rave reviews! Thank you, Trinity, for this very generous summer treat!

Visiting the Pantry with your mom in your birthday month was never anything special - until now. Trinity Lutheran introduced the idea of "Birthday Boxes." Each family with a child celebrating a birthday that month will receive a wrapped box containing a cake mix, frosting, candles, birthday napkins & paper plates! They gift-wrapped the boxes and delivered them to the Pantry. We are ready for the birthday children to arrive.  Let the parties begin!

Volunteer Hours Really Add Up

In the summer issue of our newsletter, we talked about our new policy of having all the volunteers sign in so we can have a record of the volunteer hours that are donated to the Pantry. For July, August and September we logged in 641, 672, and 668 hours respectively. Keep in mind volunteer hours can mean hours spent working at the Pantry, driving around picking up food from our Red Barrels, doing registration work at home, picking up donated baked goods from Panera, Jimmy Johns and Dominicks, or time spent working on this newsletter. You can see how it all adds up!

Healthy Community Foundation/ Healthy Community Partnership

Among the list of groups who significantly assist the Self Help Closet & Pantry is the Healthy Community Foundation. In addition to generous cash donations from the Foundation, the Healthy Community Partnership  has provided volunteers to transport clients to the Pantry (and food to a homebound client) in the past several months.

There is widespread confusion about this wonderful organization because its address is the same as city hall. Although Alderman Rosemary Argus is the head of the Foundation, it is NOT a part of the city. Their mission is: Identifying, linking and mobilizing community assets that will benefit all people of Des Plaines. For more information, go to cityofdesplaines.org and go to Health and Human Services then Healthy Community Partnership.
