Tailgate Party’s a Huge Success!

This year's annual "Tailgate" fundraiser for the pantry raised $2,780 and the Chicago Bears won the game!  The pantry sends many thanks to party coordinators Carol Shannon and Tom Christiansen (pictured above) and to Steve Musselman for his very generous donation of raffle and silent auction items.

Danube Swabians Spread the Christmas Cheer

This is the eighth year that the Society of the Danube Swabians, 625 Seegers Road, Des Plaines, has sent car loads of donations to the Self Help Closet & Pantry of Des Plaines.   On December 9, at their annual Christmas party, the Society welcomed Debra Walusiak, Executive Director of the Self Help Closet & Pantry. See photo below.

President Eckhard Blaumueller of the Society of the Danube Swabians presented Walusiak with a donation of $3,500.  Five hundred dollars of that amount was the proceeds of a November rummage sale held by the Woman’s Auxiliary of the Society to specifically raise funds for the Self Help Closet & Pantry.

In addition to the monetary donation given to the Food Pantry, each child and teen from the Society's children and youth folkdance groups brought non-perishable food items, gift cards, and children’s books for families who are experiencing a time of need this holiday season.

Close to 500 items of non-perishable food was collected at the Christmas party, along with $1,200 worth of gift cards, and 48 children’s books.  Many of the gift cards and books were selected by the children themselves to give to boys and girls their own age who may not otherwise receive a gift this holiday season.

The Society of the Danube Swabians is principally organized for charitable purposes. Being that the founding members of the Society were poor German immigrants who had been given an opportunity to come to the United States for a better life, it became the mission of the Society to provide supervised program activities for the children, youth, and senior citizens of the community, as well as reaching out to the community at large.

Children from the ages of 3 to 13 can become members of the children's folkdance group; young adults from 13 until 22 are able to join the youth folkdance group.

More information about The Society of the Danube Swabians, or its upcoming events, can be found on their website at www.donauchicago.com.

Truckload of Warmth

The Babysitting Club at Maine West High School and Iroquois Community School teamed up with Two Men and a Truck for a very successful coat drive for the Pantry in October. They collected many cartons of warm winter coats that the Pantry distributed to their needy clients in November and December. The students delivered the coats to the pantry on Halloween, hence the costumes!

Maine West “Cans Across Des Plaines” Food Drive.

Maine West student leaders Panagiota Melonas, Jessica Mueller, and Ravi Shah get a tour of the Pantry from Board Member and volunteer Holly Wilson while waiting for the first load of food to arrive from the human chain starting at the high school.

The  students passed cartons and bags of food from student to student  down the east side of Wolf Road from Oakton Street to Algonquin where it was loaded into big bins and wheeled across the street to the pantry.

Shown below are Algonquin Middle school students making their way to join the human chain at Wolf and Algonquin.

Empty Bowls Event Serves Many

The 8th annual Empty Bowls event at Oakton Community College was held Sat., Dec. 3. This year the event raised $26,000 to benefit 6 local food pantries, up from 5 last year. Every year local artists get together and create bowls and other pottery items to be donated to this event. (See photo above.) Attendees bought the bowls for $12 each, had them wrapped and then received a "soup kitchen lunch". There was a silent auction and a great raffle, as well. Delightful background music was provided by the eclectic duo "Pachouli." All those who attended enjoyed being in the company of such talented artists. The SHC&P had an info table this year. Volunteer and Board Member Katherine Bausone passed out our brochures, magnets, and our fall newsletter and answered any questions the attendees had about the Pantry.

Don't miss this wonderful event. Mark your calendar for the first Saturday in December 2012.
