Ward Meeting: Wednesday 2/10/10

Topic: The Proposed Form Based Zoning Ordinance

What will your neighborhood look like in the next 10, 20, or 30 years?  The Des Plaines Zoning Board has been working to revise the City's zoning ordinance with the goal of preserving neighborhood's values while preparing for future growth.  This month's 3rd Ward Meeting will feature our second Des Plaines 101 presentation.  Learn about the proposed Form Based Zoning ordinance and give me your thoughts before we begin the debate in Council Chambers.  Please consider bringing a neighbor; the best public policy is not made in private.

MLK Day 1/18/10: Help Haiti

"An individual has not started living until he can rise above the narrow confines of his individualistic concerns to the broader concerns of all humanity." -Martin Luther King, Jr.

On January 12, a series of earthquakes measuring 6.5 to 7.3 on the Richter scale devastated Haiti.  On January 18, celebrate the life of Dr. King by donating to the American Red Cross Haiti Relief and Development Fund.  Visit their website or text "HAITI" to 90999 (read more about texting a donation here).  The American Red Cross is working with its partners in the global Red Cross and Red Crescent network, including the Haitian Red Cross, and other partners to assist those affected by this disaster.

Casino Update: Development Schedule

Memo from the Department of Community and Economic Development

The preliminary Planned Unit Development (PUD) materials for the Des Plaines Casino development were received by the Department of Community and Economic Development on January 4th and are currently undergoing staff review. Based upon this submittal, we have laid out the following timeline for the Casino’s regulatory approvals:

(subject to change)
January 25th
- Plan Commission review of Preliminary PUD submittal
January 26th - Community Development Committee review of Preliminary PUD
February 16th - City Council first reading of Preliminary PUD and zoning change
March 1st - Second Reading PUD & estimated date of commencement of demolition
March 15th - Tentative start of construction (site work)
July 30, 2011 - Completion

There are intermediary steps which must be adhered to, of course, and the final engineering and Final PUD submittals would have to follow the Preliminary almost immediately, but it looks as though those elements are already nearly complete and the schedule, while aggressive, is achievable.
