Westfield Sign Restored

In early January, a vehicle accident caused the Westfield neighborhood sign at Second and Thacker to fall from its post and crack in half. The grandfather of a Terrace Elementary School student, who had re-created the Terrace school sign on Westgate, volunteered to re-create the Westfield sign. It's now hanging proudly back where it belongs. For the full story and photos of how the sign was re-made, visit the 3rd Ward Facebook page.

In Memoriam - Alderman Joanna Sojka

Late Monday night, August 18, 2014, the City of Des Plaines lost a dedicated public servant, my dear colleague and friend, Alderman Joanna Sojka. She and I were sworn in to office on the Des Plaines City Council the same day - May 6, 2013. We were kindred spirits serving as first-time elected officials with hope and promise for our City's future.
Her dedication to her position and brave stance on her positions inspired me. Her ability to focus on individual talents and bring people up rather than tear them down proved that government could function and move forward positively. She will continue to be a bright and shining example of what is possible when one believes in truth, reason, compassion and respect for the democratic process above all else.
Alderman Sojka took an oath to support the Constitution of the United States and the State of Illinois and to faithfully discharge her duties as Alderman of the 7th Ward. She did so with pride in her country, her state, her city and her community. I wish to express my sympathy to the people of Des Plaines for having lost such a promising leader.
My heart aches for her family who lost a daughter and a sister too soon. I'm thinking of the words of Cat Stevens, as Joanna was here for such a short while but left us with the joy and honor of having known her. "Oh very young, what will you leave us this time? You're only dancing on this earth for a short while."

To volunteer, contact Annette Sommer at HandsOn Suburban Chicago at annette.sommer@volunteerinfo.net or (847) 228-1320. Individuals who would like to apply to have their homes painted, must complete this form and mail it to the address on the form.
